Whether you’re preparing for colder weather or you have another reason to store your motorcycle for a few months, you’ll need to consider the best way to protect your bike while it’s tucked away. Covering it in the driveway is one option, but that increases the chances of animal nesting, weather damage, theft and vandalism. For optimal protection, store your motorcycle in a garage, shed or storage facility. And if you’re storing it for more than a few weeks, consider following this advice to keep your bike in great shape so it’s ready to ride when you are.
Fill the Tank
A partially empty gas tank leaves room for moisture buildup. Gassing up your bike before storage is the best way to prevent that from occurring. But be sure to add a fuel stabilizer because gas can clog up the inner workings of your motorcycle if left alone for too long. The stabilizer keeps it fresher for longer.
Charge the Battery
Motorcycle batteries can die during storage. Keep yours juiced up by connecting it to a battery tender while storing your bike. You wouldn’t want to retrieve your bike from storage just to learn that you can’t start it.
Clean the Bike
Motorcycles get dirty while riding and all that grime hardens over time. Thoroughly wash your bike before putting it in storage so the filth doesn’t have a chance to really grab hold and settle onto your bike. You’ll be happy you took the time to scrub it down come time to ride again.
Run the Engine
If your motorcycle is easily accessible while being stored, fire up the engine for five minutes every few weeks. Engines are built for use and they work best when they don’t sit for too long collecting dust.
Coverage is just as important during storage. Call Transworld Insurance Group at (703)-591-6668 for more information on Arlington motorcycle insurance.
